Engineering remains one of India's most chosen careers, and for good reasons. But it's also surrounded by beliefs that were formed a generation ago and no longer hold. Choosing engineering based on these myths leads to disappointment. Here are five that deserve an honest look.
Myth 1: “Engineering Guarantees a Good Job”
This was closer to true when engineers were scarce. Today, India produces a very large number of engineering graduates every year, and a degree alone guarantees nothing. What does still work is being a genuinely skilled engineer who keeps learning. The degree opens a door; your skills decide whether you walk through it.
Myth 2: “Only IIT (or a Top College) Counts”
The IITs are excellent but represent a tiny share of engineering seats. Plenty of accomplished engineers come from NITs, state colleges and private institutions. Beyond the first job, what you've actually built and learned matters far more than the name on your degree. Treating anything below an IIT as failure is both inaccurate and harmful.
Myth 3: “It's the Safe, Practical Choice”
Engineering feels safe because it's familiar, but ‘safe’ depends entirely on fit. For a student who loves problem-solving, it's a great practical choice. For a student pushed into it who dislikes maths and machines, four hard years and an unhappy career is not ‘safe’ at all — it's a costly mismatch.

Branches differ enormously in what you study and where they lead — computer science, mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics, chemical and more are genuinely different worlds. Choosing a branch casually, or only by which has the ‘best placements’ this year, is a common and avoidable mistake.
Myth 5: “Engineers Only Do Engineering”
Many engineering graduates move into management, business, finance, design, data, research or entrepreneurship. The analytical training is a launchpad, not a cage. An engineering degree is one of the more versatile starting points there is — which is a point in its favour, not evidence that the degree was ‘wasted’.
The Honest Picture
Engineering deserves its place among India's strong careers. It just doesn't deserve the myths. Choose it because the work genuinely appeals — building, solving, understanding how things work — and you can have an excellent career from many colleges and many branches. Choose it on autopilot, and even an IIT seat won't save a poor fit.
